Canada Immigration Criteria > Language Proficiency

The Principal Applicant is awarded points on the basis of their demonstrated proficiency in Canada's official languages. Demonstration of language skills may be via subjective documentation showing your education or employment in an environment using that language, or by an objective test score such as the IELTS or TEF.

You are awarded points based on proficiency in each of four abilities (Speaking, Reading, Writing, Listening). Points are awarded as follows:

High Proficiency (per ability)

4 points

Moderate Proficiency (per ability)

2 points

Basic Proficiency (per ability)

1 point (to a maximum of 2 points)

No Proficiency (per ability)

0 points


Second official language (English or French)

High Proficiency (per ability)

2 points

Moderate Proficiency (per ability)

2 points

Basic Proficiency (per ability)

1 point (to a maximum of 2 points)

No Proficiency (per ability)
